Arachne: thread by thread
Entitled 'Arachne: thread by thread, stitch by stitch, sign by sign', the group show dedicated to textile art at MUST in Lecce, curated by Claudia Branca with a catalogue by Lia De Venere and Massimo Guastella, celebrates the transformation of weaving from a predominantly female daily practice to an art form without gender boundaries. The exhibition, enriching the museum's ground floor until October, follows in the footsteps of previous exhibitions such as those of Marianna Elmo's embroidered works in 2021 and Angelo Filomeno's in 2023, exploring how fabric is transformed into an independent expressive medium, with 30 works that dialogue through the use of various textile materials and techniques such as knots, weaving and stitching. The exhibition boasts contributions from artists who have innovated the use of fabric and embroidery, citing examples such as Alighiero Boetti's 'Embroidered Maps' and the work of Maria Lai, who linked the practice of sewing to the creation of community ties. Presenting works by artists of various generations and nationalities, from both private collections and galleries, the exhibition highlights a segment of visual art that also includes important figures from the Salento region, with the likes of Vincenzo Agnetti, Arman, Christian Boltanski, and many others who have evolved this art form.
Hours: until 22 October, Tuesday to Sunday 9-21.
Tickets: 5,50 euro.
