A very narrow bridge
Fifteen artists tell the thousand and one faces of Israel through images: multicultural, full of artistic ferment and light years away from the collective imagination based on international television reports. Fiammetta Martegani, curator at the Eretz Israel Museum, has collected in a group show the works of Jewish and Muslim artists, men and women, straight and gay, religious and agnostic, who express themselves through the use of their language of origin: Hebrew, Arabic, Yiddish, and even ancient Hebrew transcribed in Japanese calligraphy. They are: Anissa Ashkar (Love and... what else? ); Michael Ben Abu (The Circle of Life); Amos Biderman (Jew on Horseback); Raya Bruckenthal (A Golden Paradise); Tsibi Geva (Bird in the Wadi Ara); Leor Grady (Untitled-Lekhah Dodi); Kazuo Ishi (Kohelet); Liron Lavi Turkeinch (Aravrit); Dede & Nitzan (Gold); Haim Maor (Self-Portrait with My Parents VS Khader, Machmud and Bisan); Lenore Mizrachi Cohen (Worried Flowers); Karam Natour (The Sensual World III); Israel Rabinovitch (I will be what I will be); Khader Oshah (Self-Portrait); Ruth Noam Segal (No Storm in Sight). The title of the exhibition 'A very narrow bridge' is taken from a verse by Rabbi Nachman of Breslov, which reads: 'The whole world is a very narrow bridge and the important thing is not to be afraid'.
