
Leccese paper mache tour

The secrets of the ancient art of papier-mâché are revealed by crossing the alleys and looking out into the courtyards of Lecce thanks to the "Lecce papier-mâché tour: from the sacred to the profane", the first stage of the review of thematic itineraries "The Castle Outside - connections with the territory ”Organized and promoted by Through the Castle, in collaboration with the Superintendence of Archeology, Fine Arts and Landscape for the provinces of Brindisi and Lecce. A tour that accompanies visitors to discover an excellent craftsmanship for the city of Lecce, which dates back to the eighteenth century and has its roots in the heart of the Baroque city thanks to the small shops born right among the mazes of the historic center. A museum is also dedicated to the art of papier-mâché, today inside the old stables of the Charles V Castle.
The tour takes place along an itinerary that allows you to learn about the history of the most representative monuments of Lecce and, in particular, that of the most famous papier-mâché makers, including the masters Di Donfrancesco and Epicochi, whose works are housed in many churches of the city. Participants also have the opportunity to take part in a workshop and create a papier-mâché mask with their own hands.
Meeting at 9.30 in Porta Napoli. The tour, lasting 3 hours, starts at 10 and, in addition to the itinerary in the city, also stops at the Museum of papier-mâché.
